Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) solution used to replace one or more missing teeth. Bridges help restore both the appearance and function of your smile by filling the gap where teeth are missing.

There are various kinds of dental bridges. Your dentist will discuss which option suits your needs best. The most common is the traditional bridge, typically made of porcelain fused to metal. A traditional bridge uses crowns placed on the teeth adjacent to the space (called abutment teeth), which support one or more artificial teeth (pontics) in between to bridge the gap.

Dental bridges are built to last for many years with proper care, but they may require replacement or re-cementing over time due to everyday use.

Why Consider a Fixed Bridge?

  • Fill the space created by missing teeth
  • Maintain natural facial shape
  • Prevent neighboring teeth from shifting out of position
  • Restore the ability to chew and speak properly
  • Improve the appearance of your smile
  • Provide a permanent alternative to a removable partial denture

What to Expect When Getting a Fixed Bridge

Receiving a dental bridge usually takes two or more visits:

  • First Visit: The area is numbed, and a small amount of enamel is removed from the abutment teeth to make room for crowns. An impression of your teeth is taken and sent to a dental lab where your custom bridge is crafted. You’ll receive a temporary bridge to protect your teeth and gums while your permanent one is being made.
  • Second Visit: Our dentist will check the fit and appearance of your permanent bridge, making adjustments as needed. Sometimes the bridge may be temporarily cemented to give your teeth and gums time to adapt. In a follow-up visit, our dentist will permanently cement the bridge in place.

After your bridge is placed, you’ll receive instructions on how to care for it. Brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist regularly will help extend the life of your new dental bridge and keep your smile healthy.
